The Italian Senate approved a motion asking the government, representing the EU, to present at the UN a resolution for a universal moratorium on executions.
A similar motion with a more binding operative text, presented by SDI Senator Ottaviano Del Turco, asked the government to present the proposal to the UN even without the unanimous consensus of the EU, but it was rejected.
During the debate, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Alfredo Mantica asked that the decision, whether to present or not a moratorium resolution at the ongoing UN General Assembly, be put to the EU, in particular the General Affairs Council of September 29.
HOC President Marco Pannella declared: "The government has acted indecently and irresponsibly on this matter, particularly on this occasion, our efforts to get the government to fulfil its declared commitments have been futile."
Hands Off Cain and the Radical Party protested with a sit-in in front of the Senate, to back Del Turco's un-watered down motion.
