The judge presiding over the trial of two Australian aid workers in Kabul has been named as an associate of Osama bin Laden and placed on a Reserve Bank of Australia financial blacklist.
Noor Mohammed Saqib, chief justice of the Taliban Supreme Court, appears on a list of people and organisations whose assets will be frozen by the bank if they are found to have accounts in Australia.
Aid workers Peter Bunch and Diana Thomas appeared before the judge along with six German and US colleagues on trial for allegedly preaching Christianity in the devoutly Muslim country. The aid workers could face the death penalty but their supporters and lawyer are confident they will be cleared.
