the Lahore High Court (LHC) in Pakistan sought a report from the Punjab government on a petition filed against the solitary confinement of thousands of prisoners on death row in death cells. Petitioner Tanvir Ahmad submitted that soon after the prisoners had been awarded the death sentence by the sessions court, they were shifted to the death cells in jails. The prisoners spent years until the confirmation of their sentence by the superior courts, he said. He said the prisoners’ lives were miserable as they were brought out of their death cells for only a short period of time. He pleaded to the court to direct the federal and Punjab governments to abolish this “inhumane treatment”.
