The last executions in Madagascar were carried out under French colonial rule in 1958. Several offences are capital crimes under the Penal Code. According to Amnesty, some members of parliament expressed support for the abolition of the death penalty in 2003.
On December 18, 2008 and December 21st, 2010, Madagascar voted in favour of the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
