The last executions in Madagascar were carried out under French colonial rule in 1958. Since independence in 1960 there have been two death sentences, but they were commuted. Several offences are capital crimes under the Penal Code. According to Amnesty, some members of parliament expressed support for the abolition of the death penalty in 2003.
