The local Tanzanian newspaper Daily News reported that Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume reversed the death penalty passed on two Russian citizens. The paper quoted a statement issued by the Russian embassy as saying Karume saved the lives of the two convicts by using the power vested to him under the Union Constitution. The two Russians, identified as Dmitrive Kosyakov and Serger Ochirov, had been sentenced to death by the Court of Appeal last April after being found of guilty of murdering a colleague in Zanzibar in December 1997.
