The Minister of Women's rights, children's development and family welfare, Arianne Navarre-Marie, appealed to the Miss Mauritius organizing committee to boycott the Miss World competition to be held in Nigeria on 7 December 2002, in solidarity with Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman sentenced to death by stoning by her country's judiciary. The minister was addressing the annual general assembly of the National Women's Council at Theatre du Plaza.
