the Mississippi Supreme Court threw out the death sentence of Roderick Eskridge and ordered the Grenada County Circuit Court to re-sentence him to life in prison without parole.
Eskridge was 17 at the time of his crime and was convicted for his part in Dec. 2, 1997, robbery-murder of 34-year-old Cheryl Johnson. He pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to death in 1999 by an Attala County jury. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled this year that it was unconstitutional to execute those who committed capital offenses when they were under 18.
