The mother of a Briton facing execution in America begged [British Prime Minister] Tony Blair to save him.
Lula Mae Pellerin, 58, whose son Tracy Housel has spent 16 years on Death Row, said: "Mr Blair is the only man who can save his life.
"I beg him to pick up the phone and call George Bush.
"Mr Blair is a hero in America and the President will listen to him.
"I ask him to act, not only as the British Prime Minister but as a parent."
Lula spoke out as Amnesty International protesters gathered outside Downing Street. They unveiled a placard bearing a huge syringe to symbolise the lethal injection by which Housel is due to die on March 12. Amnesty said the Downing Street demo was a "last-ditch" attempt to appeal to Mr Blair about the "heinous" death sentence.
Housel was convicted in 1986 of the murder of hitchhiker Jean Drew, whom he had picked up in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
