The new Criminal Code that came into force on August 1, 2003 removed the death penalty for ordinary crimes. It was previously prescribed under the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, that stipulated: "Until such time as it is abolished, the death penalty may be prescribed for particularly grave crimes as an exceptional punishment".
