The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Amien Rais said that those behind the April 3 bombing in the Indonesian city of Ambon deserved heavy punishment as the incident had a disruptive effect on the implementation of the peace pact between the two warring groups in the area.
"The security agencies must hunt down the perpetrators and their mastermind. If necessary, they should be sentenced to death to give a lesson to other like criminals," the MPR chief said.
Four people were killed and tens of others injured when a high-powered bomb exploded in the city. The explosion upset the community and a mob of unidentified people later to set fire to the Maluku governor's office. The flare-up came less than two months after the warring camps in Ambon signed a peace pact in Malino, South Sulawesi on February 13.
The pact ended three years of sectarian clashes which claimed the lives of thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands of others to flee their home for fear of their safety.
"The two communities of different religious faiths now live in peace and they are doing so with sincerity," Amien said, emphasising his belief that the peace process had not failed.
