The Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court jury voted 7-5 that Charles Carpenter should die for the Nov. 23, 1994 murder and rape of 63-year-old Ann Powell. It had convicted him last week of 1st-degree murder.
Judge Dee Anna Farnell will sentence Carpenter, 40, later this year.
Carpenter was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1997, but the Florida Supreme Court reversed his conviction in 2001 and ordered a new trial.
