the President of France’s communist party, Nicole Borvo, welcomed as a “positive step by France” the decision taken by President Chirac to review the constitution in order to include the abolition of the death penalty “under all circumstances”.
“Its a positive step taking into account the fact that death sentences and executions continue to be carried out around the world,” said in a statement the senator, also vice-president of the senate’s legislative commitee.
Borvo was spearheading a bill for “the creation of a national day for the universal abolition of the death penalty”, voted in by the Senate on February 12, 2002, but never debated in parliament.
