The president of the opposition Greater Romania Party (PRM) Corneliu Vadim Tudor called for the introduction of the death penalty for child murderers and rapists in a range of Romanian counties and for a certain period of time.
Tudor told a news conference that the Romanian people had to have their say on this issue in a referendum and explained that the death penalty is necessary in order to prevent an irreversible degradation of the Romanian society.
The PRM Senator stressed that he had made this proposal in 1999, but was then accused of extremism by Valeriu Stoica, president of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL), who himself recently called for the introduction of the death penalty for terrorists.
