The Republic of Yemen TV reported that President Ali Abdallah Salih granted amnesty to the leaders of the secession of 1994, some of whom had been sentenced to death in absentia. President Salih, speaking during a special broadcast by Yemen TV to mark the 13th anniversary of national unity day said: "Brothers and sisters, we have always reiterated the unification of our ranks and joining of our efforts and energies towards nation-building.
We decided to offer amnesty during the war of the summer of 1994, and by so doing many of those pardoned returned to the country.
To continue with a similar trend, we announce, during this great occasion, an amnesty to all those who were convicted in the grave criminal case No.5 of 1997." The report did not divulge the names of those that would be granted amnesty.
