The same month, the One Nation Party ran a controversial advertisement, which advocated a referendum on the death penalty, in the last week of the state election campaign. The black and white advertisement showed a scared school girl being pursued through bushland, and then showed her body covered by a sheet with a policeman standing by. "If your child or grandchild was kidnapped, raped and murdered, would you want the animals who did it to go to jail for just a few years?" the advertisement said. "This is what is happening, we have people out there, or animals as we would refer to them, who are raping and murdering young children. And those people should be dealt with accordingly," One Nation Upper House candidate, David Oldfield said. The State's Civil Liberties Council said it opposes the death penalty, but said it does not oppose open debate of the issue.
