The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Gu Weiguo to death for murder and robbery. Gu, a 34-year-old resident of Nanhui District, had been living with his girlfriend for three years. Fearing that a lack of money would interfere with his plans for a joyous Spring Festival, Gu reportedly decided to rob his girlfriend's uncle-in-law. On January 18, Gu visited the food store run by Zhang Junhui, the uncle. It was alleged that after having dinner with Zhang's wife and two sons, Gu suddenly sprayed toxic aerosol onto the faces of the two boys. He then stabbed the mother and the elder son to death. Later, he broke into the bedroom and stabbed Zhang to death. Only the younger son escaped.
