The Ukrainian newspaper 'Segodnya' said Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev "or his supporters" had announced a fatwa on an Internet website identified as www.jikhad.org offering a reward of 2.5m dollars for Russian president Vladimir Putin's head. "Putin has been sentenced to death. He who executes the verdict will deserve the mercy of Allah," the website statement was quoted as saying.
