The UN Third Committee concluded session by approving draft resolutions on human rights in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Under a text on the situation of human rights in Iraq the Assembly, recalling previous resolutions of the Commission on Human Rights and of the Security Council, would strongly condemn, among other things, the systematic, widespread and extremely grave violations of human rights and international law by the Government of Iraq.
It would also condemn the suppression of freedom of thought, expression, information, association, assembly and movement through fear of arrest, imprisonment, execution, expulsion house demolition or other sanctions.
The Bahamas voted in favour without prejudice to its belief that matters pertaining to the death penalty should be left to States to decide.
