The United Nations announced it would probe the murder of hundreds of people in Togo two years ago, allegedly by paramilitary forces after 1998 presidential elections. A three-man commission of inquiry will look into "allegations that hundreds of people were victims of extrajudicial executions in Togo in 1998," according to a joint statement from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Organisation of African Unity Secretary-General Salim Ahmed Salim. Amnesty International had listed 48 political assassinations in Togo between 1991 and 1997 in addition to several hundred executions and disappearances around the 1998 presidential elections that kept President Gnassingbe Eyadema in power.
