The Venezuelan Supreme Court (TSJ) approved a request for the extradition of alleged anti-Castro terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, who is jailed in Panama on charges of conspiring to kill the Cuban leader.
Posada Carriles, who was jailed in Venezuela for his role in blowing up a Cuban airplane with 73 civilians aboard in 1976, spent nine years in Venezuela's San Juan de los Morros prison, where he escaped in 1985 before being officially sentenced with the crime.
In November 2000, Posada, 73, was arrested during the Ibero-American Summit in Panama, after Cuban President Fidel Castro claimed the alleged terrorist planned to assassinate him. The Cuban exile was arrested and charged with weapons possession and conspiracy, along with three other men from Miami.
Cuba requested his extradition in November 2000, but the Panamanian government denied the petition in April 2001, citing sufficient evidence to try Posada Carriles in Panama.
Should Panama agree to extradite the alleged terrorist [to Venezuela], President Hugo Chavez, a self-described leftist and friend of Castro, would likely turn him over to Cuba.
