Ergastolo ostativo: life imprisonment without parole

Archive theme

The ergastolo ostativo is the Italian life sentence which, for certain offences, shuts off day release, work outside the prison and parole when the prisoner does not cooperate with the authorities. For years it meant a sentence with no prospect of review at all. After rulings by the European Court of Human Rights and by the Italian Constitutional Court, the rules were amended in 2022.

For the association it is the Italian front of the campaign it calls death by punishment: a sentence built in such a way that it rules out any end from the start. This page collects the news on the subject.
