Thousands of people gathered in Nigeria's Niger Delta for the symbolic reburial of the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose execution by the military government in 1995 aroused worldwide condemnation. Saro-Wiwa, who campaigned for the rights of the Ogoni people, a small ethnic group in the oil-rich Niger Delta, was hanged along with eight other men, after being found guilty of murder by a special tribunal set up by Nigeria's former military ruler, General Sani Abacha. The executions sparked international condemnation and resulted in Nigeria's suspension from the Commonwealth.
