Three gangsters of Dubai-based organisation were given capital punishment for a murderous attack on former city mayor Milind Vaidya in March 1999. In the shooting three persons were killed and seven others, including the then mayor, were injured. Mohammed Zuber Kasim Shaikh, Fazal Mohammed Shaikh Agnamutt Shettiyar and Azizuddin Zahiruddin Shaikh were sentenced to death by the judge who observed that this was one of the rarest of the rare cases in which the assailants had unleashed a reign of terror in society. They were charged with offences under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
