Three Moroccan human rights associations called for a new trial for Majda Mostefa Mahir, a Moroccan woman recently condemned to death for the killing of a Saudi prince, Farid Ben Abdallah Al-Mishari Al-Saoud. The three NGOs, AMDH, OMDH and the Forum for Truth and Justice, sent an open letter to the Saudi ambassador in Rabat expressing their concern on the woman's fate.
Majda has always insisted that she is innocent and that the prince's death was accidental, the letter said. Her version of the facts had been accepted by the authorities until the dead prince's family insisted that she be executed.
On the basis of this, Amnesty International and other humanitarian organisations asked the Saudi Interior Minister Naïf Ben Abdulaziz to commute her death sentence. Saudi Arabia has a duty to respect international human rights standards, including the right to life, the NGOs said.
Majda had no legal assistance during her trial, the organisations said. They are now mounting a wide-reaching campaign to convince the Riyadh authorities to shed light on the woman's fate.
Majda has been held in the Saudi prison of Maraz since 1997.
