TUNISIA: CONSTITUTION TO SEE END OF DEATH PENALTY, ITALY SAYS

the abolition of capital punishment must be included in Tunisia's new constitution. This is one of the wishes expressed by Italy in occasion of the second universal periodic review of the situation in Tunisia by the UN council of Human Rights taking place today in Geneva.
The Italian ambassador for the International Organizations in Geneva Laura Mirachian said that Italy wishes furthermore for Tunisia to guarantee the respect of freedom of religion by and to everyone, during this period of transition and beyond, abiding in this way to the tradition and culture present in the country.
Italy also showed appreciation to the Tunisian authorities for the de facto amnesty of the death penalty and the recent ratifying of a number of bills dealing with human rights, including the Statute of the International Penal Court agreed in Rome and also for strengthening cooperation with the UN in the of human rights sector.
