Two Botswana fugitives were extradited back to the Botswana from South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs said.
The men, Liberty Mhlanga and Jimmy Gaboitaolelwe, handed themselves over to the police and requested political asylum in 2001 after escaping from Botswana's Lobatse Mental Hospital and entering South Africa illegally.
The South African government agreed to extradite the men after receiving assurances from the Botswana government that they would not be executed, Home Affairs spokesman Leslie Mashokwe said.
"We received a letter of assurance from the Botswana government that the two men will not be executed, in terms of our constitutional stipulations".
Two South Africans were unlawfully deported to Botswana in 2001 and now face the gallows. Although South Africa has asked for the men to be returned to face a proper extradition hearing, Botswana's attorney-general has refused to do so.
A South African man is currently on death row in Gaborone.
