Two men were handed death sentences in the Bahamas, at the end of separate murder trials in which the juries returned unanimous guilty verdicts.
Justice Anita Allen handed down the sentence to a 24-year-old youth, Kendon Brown, on March 12 for the July 7, 2001 fatal shooting of a nurse, Joan Lunn, while she was tending to a patient in the Private Surgical Ward of the main Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau.
The jury also found Brown guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder - two charges for which he was jointly charged with Monte Thompson. However, the duo will return to court on 19 March for sentencing. Under Bahamas law, the maximum sentence for a person found guilty of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder is life imprisonment. Defence
Attorney Langton Hilton, who represented both men at the month long trial, announced his intention to appeal their convictions.
In a separate case, a 36-year-old man also received the death sentence. Justice Ricardo Marques presided over the case in which a 12-member jury found Ashley Newbold guilty of the shooting death of a nightclub manager on December 20, 1996.
