the Ugandan Court of Appeal rejected a Gulu prison warder’s petition against his death sentence for torturing an escapee to death. The court, headed by Justice Alice Mpagi-Bahigeine, upheld Justice Augustus Kania's judgement that Absolom Omolo Owiny was guilty of killing Michael Wanok. In 2001, Wanok was a prisoner serving a custodial sentence at Kakira Prison in Paidha district when he escaped from Owiny, who was guarding him. He was re-arrested the following day and was taken to the Police station. Owiny allegedly took him from Police custody back to Kakira Prison and tortured him. Wanok died from injuries inflicted on him with a baton.
