UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw led condemnation of Robert Mugabe after the Zimbabwean president's main rival in the forthcoming election was charged with high treason.
The Foreign Secretary said the charge against Morgan Tsvangirai, which carries the death penalty, was 'a disturbing development'.
'Coming just days before the presidential elections, it looks like yet another attempt by the Mugabe regime to obstruct the conduct of the election and the ability of the people of Zimbabwe to choose, freely and fairly, who should lead them,' he added.
'I will be discussing the harassment of the opposition in Zimbabwe with Commonwealth colleagues at the meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on Friday.'
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged Mugabe's government not to tamper with the election.
'The situation in Zimbabwe is worrying,' he said after meeting [UK Prime Minister] Tony Blair in London - but before news of the charge against Tsvangirai.
'I believe that the people of Zimbabwe should be given a chance for a free and fair election.'.
