speaking at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, holding its annual meet in Geneva, Italian Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Margherita Boniver condemned torture stating that “no economic, political, cultural, social or religious reason can justify the use of torture, neither can any emergency nor any political or strategic objective”.
“Not even can the war against terrorism, which must be waged unceasingly, justify the suspension of rights and the implementation of fundamental rights,” Boniver stated.
Boniver announced that Italy would also this year support an anti death penalty resolution at the UN Commission. The resolution will invite all states which retain the death penalty to abolish it in full and to adopt a moratorium on executions in the interim.
