UNITED KINGDOM. HANGED PRISONER'S BODY IS EXHUMED

the body of George Kelly, a man who was hanged in 1950 for a murder he did not commit, was to be exhumed from its prison grave. Kelly was executed after he was found guilty of being involved in a notorious double murder at the Cameo Cinema in Wavertree, Liverpool.
His conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in 2003 when it was deemed to be unsafe. His remains were to be exhumed from Walton Prison so they could be re-buried in consecrated ground.
The cinema manager, Leonard Thomas, and assistant manager, John Catterall, were shot dead during a bungled burglary on 19 March 1949.
Kelly, a 27-year-old labourer, was convicted of Thomas's murder at Liverpool Assize Court and sentenced to death.
But during the appeal hearing in 2003, judges were told the police had not disclosed that a witness had come forward, claiming that a man called Donald Johnson had confessed to the crime to him. Lord Justice Rix said if the new evidence had been revealed closer to the time, the murders might not have remained unsolved. The case is regarded as one of the UK's oldest miscarriages of justice.
