a group of UN rights experts called on North Korea to suspend the scheduled execution of Son Jong Nam for alleged treason, saying he was reportedly tortured and sentenced to death without a trial. The human rights experts said they had asked North Korea's government in April to postpone the execution and review his conviction, but their appeal was rejected.
"We are profoundly dismayed by this response," they said in a statement, calling on the government to reconsider its position and abide by its international human rights obligations.
The four UN special rapporteurs were Philip Alston, an expert on extrajudicial executions; Leila Zerrougui, arbitrary detention; Manfred Nowak, torture; and Vitit Muntarbhorn, human rights in North Korea.
