Upon finding out that Lebanon was to resume executions following a six year break, by scheduling three executions for January 17, the European Union, in a statement, called on President Lahoud to reverse the decision to reinstate the death penalty. "The presidency of the European Union has learned with dismay that despite its previous expressions of concern to the Lebanese authorities, the decision has been taken" to carry out the executions, it said. "The European Union finds this form of punishment cruel and inhuman," the statement said. "The EU calls on President Lahoud to use the authority granted to him to reverse this decision and thus to uphold the current moratorium."
