US CONDEMNS IRANIAN EXECUTIONS, SAYS DUE PROCESS DENIED

the US State Department responded critically to 10 recent executions in Iran, saying the rights of defendants weren't safeguarded.
"We are concerned about Iran's judicial process," State Department spokeswoman Julie Reside said. "Defendants are not receiving due process of law, and trials lack procedural safeguards."
Reside said that judge and prosecutor in Iran were the same person, trials were held frequently in closed session, and that defendants lacked access to lawyers. Right of appeal often isn't honoured, she said.
"We call on the government of Iran vigorously to pursue prison reform, to cooperate with international investigations into human rights and to respect international human rights laws and practices," Reside said.
