Judge Rick Stout sentenced Derrick Dearman to death. A Mobile County jury recommended death on Sept 20 (see). Dearman, 30, White, entered pleas of guilty in the Aug. 20, 2016 killing of 5 people. Victims were Robert Lee Brown (26), Joseph Adam Turner (27), Shannon Melissa Randall (36), Justin Kaleb Reed (23) and Chelsea Marie Reed (23), who was pregnant at the time. The only adult to survive the deadly event was Dearman's off-again, on-again girlfriend, Laneta Lester, who was staying at the home as Turner was Lester's brother. Turner and Randall's 3-month-old son was also in the house as the killings unfolded but was spared from the attacks.
