The Arizona Supreme Court has overturned James Granvil Wallace's 3 death sentences, ordering resentencings for two of the murder convictions and a life sentence for 1. The justices unanimously threw out the death sentences saying jurors were given a bad instruction about gratuitous violence, which likely affected their verdict. Wallace, 58, pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced to death 3 times by a judge for the Feb. 1, 1984 slayings of his girlfriend, Susan Insalaco, 36, and her children, Anna Monzon, 16, and Gabe Monzon, 12. (see Apr. 7, 2005).
