a Los Angeles jury sentenced Pedro Espinoza, 23, Hispanic, to death. Espinoza, a member of the 18th Street gang, shot Jamiel Shaw, 17, whom he mistook for a rival gang member, on March 2, 2008. Prosecutors said Shaw was killed execution-style because he was a young black male carrying a red Spider-Man backpack, which led Espinoza to believe he was a Bloods gang member. Espinoza is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 21.
