A Los Angeles jury today voted for the death penalty for Timothy Joseph McGhee, a notorious street gang leader who was convicted of 3 murders and the attempted murder of 2 police officers, among other crimes. McGhee, 35, was convicted in October 2007 of the murders of two rival gang members and the girlfriend of another. He also was found guilty of four attempted murders, including of the 2 police officers. 2 weeks after convicting him, however, jurors deadlocked over whether McGhee should be put to death for his crimes. Under California law, Judge Robert J. Perry has the discretion to modify the verdict at sentencing, set for Nov. 21. McGhee committed the murders in 1997, 2000 and 2001.
