Judge Michael Sweet handed down a death sentence to Richard Hirschfield, 63, white. A Sacramento County jury recommended the death penalty for Hirschfield on December 6. He was convicted of the Dec. 20, 1980, stabbing deaths of 18-year-old students John Riggins and Sabrina Gonsalves, both whites. Hirschfield was also convicted of sexually assaulting Gonsalves. Hirschfield was arrested in 2004 after new dna tests implicated the man in the unsolved crime.
