Executions down 11.6% from last year. In 2013 there have been 38 executions, the lowest number in the last 19 years with the exception of 2008, when a de facto moratorium of several months waiting for a Supreme Court decision stopped the executions at a record low of 37. Executions were 43 both in 2012 and in 2011, 46 in 2010, and 52 in 2009. To slow sown the pace of the executioner have been the many controversies on the purchase of the lethal injection drugs. As it is known, it has been some years now that important Ngos, comprehending Hands off Cain, launched a pervasive campaign to dissuade pharmaceutical industries from selling execution drugs to the Usa. This has caused and is still causing major problems for the various prison departments to obtain the drugs from both the internal and the international market. Besides the executions, death sentences are constantly decreasing. That is for the minor propensity of juries to hand down the maximum penalty and for always more widespread tendency of prosecutors to “content” themselves with minor sentences in exchange of shorter and more secure trials.
