St. Johns County jury unanimously recommend the death penalty for Kentrell Feronti Johnson, 43, Black. Johnson, Peter Marcus Hughes, 26, and Quentin Truehill, 26, broke out of a Louisiana jail cell on March 30, 2010, touching off a crime spree through the state of Florida. The trio killed Vincent Binder, 29, on April 2, 2010. The whole trio was apprehended on April 12, 2010, when they were caught trying to use Binder’s ATM card at a bank in Miami. On March 7 (see), another St. Johns County jury recommended death for Truehill. Judge Raul Zambrano, who officiated at both trials, issued a sentence of death on May 16 (see). A Spencer hearing to review the Johnson case — in which is the defense is able to present evidence on why their client should not get the death penalty — will be scheduled next week, and after that, Zambrano will notify the court of a date for final sentencing for Johnson. The third member of the group, Hughes, took a plea deal Thursday afternoon to serve life in prison.
