USA - Florida. A jury sentenced Peter Avsenew to death.
A Broward County jury has unanimously recommended that Peter Avsenew, 32, White, be sentenced to death. The trial court permitted Avsenew to fire his lawyers and represent himself in the penalty-phase of his trial. He then made no opening statement, did not contest any of the prosecution's aggravating circumstances, presented no mitigating evidence, and told the jury he had "no regrets" in life. Last November, Avsenew was found guilty in the murder of Stephen Adams, 52, and Kevin Powell, 47, in their home during Christmas 2010. Prosecutors say Avsenew met the gay couple after posting a suggestive ad on Craigslist. They say Avsenew shot the couple to death and then stole their credit cards and car. Afterwards, they say Avsenew traveled to his mother's home. She became suspicious and turned him into authorities. Avsenew claimed that he came home and found the couple dead and fled in a panic.
