USA - Florida. A jury sentenced Victor Caraballo to death

A Miami-Dade jury recommended by a vote of 9-3 that Victor Caraballo be sentenced to death for the April 27, 2002, rape and murder of Ana Maria Angel, 18. Caraballo, 39, white, confessed that he, his brother and three friends kidnapped Angel and her boyfriend, Nelson Portobanco. Caraballo and the other four men took turns raping Angel while Portobanco crouched on the floor of the truck. The men stabbed Portobanco and left him for dead by the side of the highway. Portobanco survived. The girl later was found by the side of the road with a gunshot to the back of the head. The co-defendants are still awaiting trial.
