The Florida Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of Kevin Jerome Scott, 25, black, convicted of fatally shooting the owner of a coin laundry, Kristo Binjaku, 45, on June 30, 2007. Scott should spend the rest of his life in prison instead, the court also ruled. While the 1st-degree murder conviction was upheld, the justices ruled 5-2 that the death penalty was a disproportionate punishment. The jury had voted 9-3 in favor of death. (see also July 23, 2009).
