A Newton County jury unanimously sentenced Rodney R. Young, 43, black, to death. Young was found guilty in the March 30, 2008 bludgeoning and stabbing death of 28-year-old Gary Lamar Jones. Judge Samuel Ozburn presided over the trial. Faced with overwhelming evidence, the defense conceded that Young committed the crime, but maintained he is mentally retarded.
