Mark Howard McClain was executed in Jackson. McClain, 42, white, was sentenced to death by a Richmond County jury in 1995 for the 1994 murder, during a ronnery, of a pizza store manager, Kevin Brown, 28. McClain acknowledged shooting Brown, but claimed it was unintentional. There were no relatives present, which is not uncommon, according to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Joan Heath. McClain's parents are dead, as are the parents of his victim. About a dozen capital punishment opponents from Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty held vigil outside the prison. McClain was the 3rd person executed in Georgia this year and the 45th put to death since 1983, when the state resumed executions. McClain becomes the 41st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1177th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
