Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon wrote a letter to Gov. Pat Quinn urging him to abolish the death penalty. According to the Breaking News Center, Simon told Quinn in her letter that "even in the best of circumstances, our system allows for error" but Illinois "cannot tolerate error in execution." And because a person can be found guilty of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt, but not beyond "all doubt," the Breaking News Center reports, Simon opposes capital punishment. The General Assembly has passed a bill banning the death penalty in Illinois. Gov. Pat Quinn has yet to decide whether or not he will sign it into law.
