Weisheit’s execution is one of three nationally set for November 5, with the others to be carried out by lethal injection in Alabama and Florida.

Jeffrey Weisheit, 50, White, was put to death at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City shortly after midnight. He had no last words. He was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. (local time).

The state does not generally allow media witnesses to attend, and Weisheit’s legal team could not immediately be reached for comment about his execution.

In the hours before the execution, attorneys for Weisheit had called on Indiana Gov. Mike Braun to halt his lethal injection execution and order an independent review of the state’s procedures over allegations that the state obtained its chemicals from a pharmacy currently on probation and facing suspension of its license.

Weisheit did not contest his guilt in the 2010 murders of two children, Alyssa Lynch (age 8) and Caleb Lynch (age 5), the children of his partner.

The children were tied up and died in a house fire near Evansville while their mother was working the night shift.

After the incident, Weisheit fled but was arrested in Kentucky. He was sentenced to death in 2013 (see Hoc 21/06/2013 and 11/07/2013)

The victims’ mother, Lisa Lynch, supported the execution.

Steven Lynch, the children’s father, however, had requested that the life sentence without the possibility of parole be commuted, stating that he had forgiven Weisheit.

“No parent should have to outlive their child,” Steven Lynch said before the execution, adding that “mercy is extended to even the least of us.”

Weisheit becomes the 1st person executed this year in Indiana, the 24th since Indiana resumed executions in 1981, the 33rd execution of the year in the US, and the n° 1687 overall since the nation resumed executions in 1977.
