Marco Allen Chapman was executed. Chapman, 37, white, was sentenced to death for attacking and sexually assaulting Carolyn Marksberry and slashing the throats of 2 of her children, Cody Sharon, 6, and Chelbi Sharon, 7, both white, on Aug. 23, 2002. A 3rd child, Courtney Sharon, now 16, was stabbed but survived the attack by playing dead. Since pleading guilty in 2004, Chapman repeatedly asked that all appeals in his case be stopped and that he be put to death. The execution was the 1st in Kentucky since 1999. Chapman becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Kentucky and the 3rd since the state resumed capital punishment in 1997. Chapman becomes the 36th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1135th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977. (See also 14/12/2004)
